Q:What's so bad ass about riding a track bike with a brake? I'm all for Brakeless Fixed Gear races. It separates the men from the boys.
yeah!!! AND, every kids wants to be you… when THEY should be using brakes. Novices are so cool without brakes (please note sarcasm) … watch them fall.
I don’t DISS break-less , I advise learners to fixed to use a brake.
I use brakes on my street fixie but I have more than 80 inches per stroke. It is possible but very hard to pull up quickly.
Running brake-less is great with smaller gears if you ‘can’ in the first place (chuck a few more bar spins while you are at it), but those with long gears and new to fixed… well THAT is just asking for trouble … I have seen a few crashes EXACTLY about that.
Running brakes on your fixie is fine if you want to. Also a legal requirement in some places. Novice riders should not be forced into brakless for the sake of a trend. But, that is a sheep for you.
Running brake-less on the track is the only real place for it. Running an event with BRAKELESS ONLY on the road in uncolntrolled conditions is BEGGING for a lawsuit when someone falls.
I hope this event is on THE TRACK.
As for men and boys… mehh, your peer pressure means nothing to me.
AND.
I take my brakes off at the track.
